Why Archiware P5 is the benchmark for enterprise media archiving

October 2024·4 min read

Media archiving is one of those problems that looks simple until it isn't. Most production companies manage reasonably well with external drives and a shared folder structure, until a drive fails, a project can't be found, or the business reaches a scale where manual management breaks down. Archiware P5 is built for what comes next.

What Archiware P5 does

Archiware P5 is a professional data management platform designed for media and entertainment workflows. It handles archive, backup, and synchronisation across a range of storage destinations, including LTO tape, AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, Wasabi, and other object storage providers. The key differentiator is the combination of reliability, flexibility, and media-native metadata handling. P5 understands media file structures in a way that general-purpose backup tools don't.

Why tape still matters

LTO tape gets dismissed as old technology, but for archiving it remains the most cost-effective and durable long-term storage medium available. A single LTO-9 cartridge holds 18TB of native data, with a rated shelf life of 30+ years. For content that needs to be preserved but won't be accessed frequently, tape is often 80–90% cheaper than cloud storage over a 10-year horizon. P5 manages LTO natively, including LTFS formatting that makes tapes readable without proprietary software.

Cloud and hybrid architectures

For productions that need cloud accessibility or geographic redundancy, P5 supports hybrid archive architectures: keeping recent projects on fast local storage, archiving completed projects to tape, and replicating critical assets to cloud. This gives you the economics of tape for deep archive and the accessibility of cloud for assets that need to be retrieved quickly.
