What is a TPN Assessment and does your business need one?
The Trusted Partner Network (TPN) is a global film and television content protection initiative managed by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). It sets the security standards that studios (including Disney, Netflix, Sony, Paramount, Warner Bros, and Universal) require from vendors and service providers who handle their content.
Who needs a TPN assessment?
Any company that handles pre-release or high-value content on behalf of a major studio will typically need TPN assessment. This includes post-production facilities, visual effects studios, dubbing houses, localisation providers, and technology vendors with access to content pipelines. If you're working with a major studio and don't have TPN status, you may be disqualified from bids, or face contract requirements to achieve it within a set timeframe.
What does a TPN assessment involve?
A TPN assessment reviews your security controls against the MPA Content Security Best Practices. This covers physical security, network security, application security, cloud security, and incident response. There are two outcome tiers: Gold Shield (fully meets all requirements) and Silver Shield (meets most requirements with an agreed remediation roadmap). Assessments are conducted by TPN-registered Assessment Partners. Wisely is one of the few in New Zealand and Australia.
How long does it take?
From initial gap analysis through to achieving TPN Registered status, most organisations should allow 3–6 months. The timeline depends heavily on your starting security posture and how quickly remediation work can be completed.
